Applied Science

Computational expertise meets buildability.

Enabling better outcomes through advanced simulation and computational design.

Our Integrated Services

Consultation, collaboration, integration and innovation.

Engineering is inherently innovative but it is also an industry that depends on certainty. The most ambitious designs, the most complex structures, the most challenging conditions all require something beyond standard procedures: the ability to simulate, predict and demonstrate performance before anything is committed to construction.

Our Applied Science Engineers are specialists in that space. They combine advanced computational design and simulation methodology with deep expertise in buildability, creating solutions that consider all elements and details simultaneously, in conditions that standard design approaches cannot fully address.

These are the people other teams come to when a problem doesn’t have a conventional answer. Working closely with clients, architects and contractors, they bring rigour to complexity, turning uncertainty into confidence, and ambitious design intent into engineered reality.

The work our Applied Science team does has a reach beyond individual projects. When a heritage masonry structure is saved through precise forensic analysis, when a building in a high seismic zone is designed to perform rather than just comply, when a material failure is understood before it becomes a human consequence that knowledge serves communities long after the project closes.

We apply specialist science capability across complex, high-performance and high-risk projects.

  • How we work

Using advanced computer modelling and analysis, our Applied Science Engineers explicitly simulate how structures and building materials respond to loading and conditions, demonstrating performance and compliance with design standards and the National Construction Code (NCC).

Our capability adds value across four distinct ways:

    • Design efficiency: all potential load paths in a structure can be shared and mobilised with fewer assumptions, leading to savings in materials and complexity
    • Design reviews: independent checking and verification using an alternative means when a design needs to be confirmed
    • Design justification: resolving questions raised by conventional design methods, including structures that have already been built
    • Forensic engineering: investigating the likely root cause of an adverse event with rigour and precision
  • What we deliver

Specialist applied science capability across complex, high-performance and high-risk projects:

    • Structural design and assessment
    • Buried asset assessment
    • Seismic analysis, assessment and design
    • Building damage and risk assessment
    • Structural dynamics
    • Extreme events and physical security
    • Product development
    • Advanced structural analysis and design of concrete and masonry
    • Seismic assessment, design and retrofit
    • Heritage and historical masonry structures
    • Vibration and structural dynamics analysis, monitoring and testing
    • Ground-structure interaction, movement and damage assessment
    • Thermal and fire analysis of concrete structures
    • Concrete durability and corrosion
    • Stability of structures
    • Fatigue analysis and design
    • Staged construction analysis
