Applied Sustainability

Sustainability expertise seamlessly integrated to reduce carbon, improve performance and enhance long-term value.

Our Integrated Services

Consultation, collaboration, integration and innovation.

The built environment is evolving. Sustainability requirements are increasing, ESG commitments are sharpening, and clients are under growing pressure to demonstrate the environmental performance of their projects. Our Applied Sustainability team supports navigating that landscape by bringing embodied carbon expertise, data-driven tools and integrated engineering thinking into the design and construction process from the earliest project stages.

Our team translate complex carbon reduction challenges into clear, actionable strategies. The result: projects that meet evolving government requirements, satisfy organisational ESG targets, and deliver buildings with lower environmental impact without compromising on cost, quality or constructability.

We bring embodied carbon expertise and integrated engineering thinking into every stage of design to deliver buildings that perform better and last longer.

  • How we work

Timing is everything in embodied carbon reduction. The greatest opportunity to influence a building’s environmental performance exists at planning and early design stage, where material choices, structural systems and site strategies are still considered. As a project moves through design into construction, that window narrows.

Early engagement is where the most significant carbon reductions are won and where our team has the greatest impact.

Our Sustainability and Digital Engineering teams have developed an in-house Embodied Carbon Calculator that allows our engineers to calculate, compare, benchmark and visualise the embodied carbon emissions on your project. The calculator takes BIM data to visualise A1-A3 embodied carbon data, allowing engineers to customise material properties, such as concrete strengths and reinforcement rates, along with the specification of different products. Design teams can then utilise our data and visualisations to collaborate with all stakeholders and consultants, identifying cost-effective strategies for reducing embodied carbon emissions from inception phase.

We work across four areas that take a project from strategic advice through to formal certification:

    • Setting Embodied Carbon Strategies: establishing carbon benchmarks, reduction targets and project briefs, and building the stakeholder engagement and training needed to carry them through
    • Delivering Carbon Reductions: master planning advice, measurement and quantification, Green Star support and NABERS Embodied Carbon Certification
    • Understanding Low Carbon Materials: material specifications, procurement policies, supply chain engagement and sourcing, and manufacturer support to make low-carbon specification practical and buildable

Reusing and Recycling Buildings: building and material reuse assessments, disassembly and circular economy planning, and digital tools and marketplaces that support a longer life for existing structures
