A major expansion, increasing Hong Kong International Airport’s passenger capacity.
Project Overview
The Terminal 2 Expansion at Hong Kong International Airport forms part of the broader Three-Runway System, a major infrastructure initiative designed to meet future air traffic demand and elevate the passenger experience.
Once complete, the expanded terminal will accommodate an additional 30 million passengers annually, reinforcing the airport’s position as a leading international and regional aviation hub.
This landmark project is expected to drive significant economic growth, supporting job creation and strengthening Hong Kong’s global connectivity.
Scope of Work
As digital, structural and façade consultants, our role focused on delivering an efficient, high-performance roof cladding design aligned with the project’s architectural ambition:
- Lead design of the Terminal 2 roof cladding, integrating off-site and modular solutions.
- Applied parametric engineering workflows to rationalise the roof and optimise material usage
- Developed in-house software to design a wide range of structural elements based on the specificity required.
- Engineered a new structural design for typhoon wind loads, containing a unique cladding prefabricated arrangement with clamped connections and modular gutters.
- Delivered automated generation of detailed BIM models (LOD400) of the roof complex geometry to provide accurate insights into how and what will be constructed.
- Designed structural, thermal and waterproofing design of glazed aluminium skylight with customized frame and glass for large wind loads.
