A new alternative to Melbourne’s West Gate Bridge, connecting the west to the port
Project Overview
The West Gate Tunnel Project is a $10 billion infrastructure development that will provide a new alternative to Melbourne’s West Gate Bridge, improving connectivity between the west and the Port of Melbourne.
The project delivers major upgrades to Melbourne’s road network, including twin tunnels, elevated roadways, and associated bridge and interchange works.
Scope of Work
TTW’s Structural, Construction Engineering, Façade, and Digital teams collaborated across disciplines and states to bring the West Gate Tunnel vent structures to life, working closely with Wood Marsh Architecture and CPBJH JV to uphold their design vision.
Using advanced parametric and computational modelling, our team:
- Simplified complex geometry for easier cladding fabrication
- Delivered a lightweight, sustainable design without compromising the architectural intent
- Provided fast, accurate responses to design modifications
- Optimised materials and spans for each panel’s size, wind loads, and location
- Standardised extrusions, connections, and details for smoother installation and reduced waste
The main challenge was balancing the architect’s 3D curved geometry with practical materiality and installation requirements. Multiple material options, including ETFE and aluminium, were explored, with parametric modelling used to optimise performance, production sizes, and costs, while ensuring ease of installation and minimal waste.
